Combining Chobe and the Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta is an inland river delta, and it is a different kind of trip from Chobe. Chobe is about elephants on a big river and game drives along its banks. The Delta is about channels, islands and quiet boat trips. Visitors look for wildlife and birds, and many go out by mokoro, the traditional dugout canoe. What you can do on the water depends on the area you visit and on the water level.
The Delta is not part of Chobe National Park, and the two are far apart. A Chobe safari and a Delta trip are two separate stays, joined by a long drive or a flight. This page helps you plan the link.

How to get from Chobe to the Delta
Three ways, each with a different trade-off.
| Option | Time and distance | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Road, Kasane to Maun | About 600 km, roughly 7 hours | The direct road; a long day at the wheel |
| Flight, Kasane to Maun | About 4 times a week | Not a daily direct flight; check the days before you plan |
| Road via Savuti | About 200 km from Savuti to Maun, 6 to 7 hours via Mababe | Slow ground; plan it as a separate trip |
Do not mix up the road route with the Savuti route. The 600 km road does not pass through Savuti or Moremi, and the off-road stretches there are much slower. For most visitors with limited time, flying is the practical link. Drive if you enjoy the distance and have a spare day. Our page on getting to Chobe explains how to reach Kasane in the first place.

Mokoro trips and the Delta by boat
A mokoro is the traditional boat of the Delta. Trips glide along the shallow channels. Prices and minimum ages vary by camp and area, so ask before you book.
Water level matters. The Delta is a changing system, and not every channel is open all year. Plan your Delta days around the area you choose and ask what is possible when you are there.

Moremi and Makgadikgadi
Two neighbouring areas people often add.
Moremi Game Reserve
Moremi protects parts of the central and eastern Okavango and is not part of Chobe. Chobe and Moremi are in the same park fee category. Here you get the basics only.
Makgadikgadi
Makgadikgadi is a salt pan landscape, mainly the Sowa and Ntwetwe pans. After rain they flood for a while. Do not treat them as year-round water like the Delta.
A 10-day combination
A 10-day photography programme runs through Chobe, the Delta and the Kalahari. That is one possible combination, not a standard length for a Botswana trip.
Entry and health for a Chobe and Delta trip
The basics apply to both parts of the journey.
Entry for German and UK passports
A regular German passport is visa-free for Botswana, with a free tourist entry permit for up to 90 days per calendar year. The passport must be valid for at least 6 months on entry, and 4 free pages are recommended. British citizens can stay up to 90 days without a visa and should have at least 3 free pages. A provisional German passport needs a visa. Check the rules for your own passport before you book.
The eVisa
If you do need a visa, the fee is 300 BWP for a single entry of up to 3 months and 500 BWP for multiple entries of up to 3 months. These fees do not apply to travellers who are visa-exempt.
Malaria and medical care
The northern parts of Chobe count as a high malaria risk all year, and the southern parts are seasonal. Medical care in Kasane is limited. Talk to a travel doctor well before you leave.
