What a photographic safari is

A photographic safari is a trip planned around pictures: longer outings and equipment made for cameras. On the Chobe the main product is the photo boat. A photo boat can have 8 seats, camera mounts and seats that turn through 360ยฐ. The boat outing lasts 3 to 4 hours, and a dedicated photo drive 4 to 5 hours. That is the equipment of specialist photo operators, not a standard for all boats on the river.

Wildlife stays free-living, so no operator can promise a particular shot. This page compares photo options with ordinary trips, explains light and season for Chobe photography and lists the rules that affect where and how you shoot.

For most photographers with a short stay, one photo boat outing and one photo drive in Kasane pay off most: you get the river and the land in good light. A standard cruise works if you are on a budget and travel light, but you share the boat with others. Photo-specific products are priced on request, so ask for the current price.

Chobe photography: light and season

When the light works for pictures.

Early and late light

The park is open from 06:00 to 18:30 from 1 April to 30 September and from 05:30 to 19:00 from 1 October to 31 March. A sunset cruise in one example runs from 15:00 to 18:00, which covers the golden hour. Houseboat photo outings run at first light and a few hours before sunset.

Dry months

In the dry winter months elephants and buffalo gather at the river, and they come to the bank in large numbers. The rainy season runs from November to March, with heavy rain and affected roads. October is the hottest month, with a long-term daily high of 34.5 ยฐC.

Season โ†’

Birds

The park has more than 460 registered bird species, and carmine bee-eaters are among them. Birds are a regular subject on a boat trip along the bank.

Wildlife โ†’

Elephants at the water

Herds come to the river to drink. A cruise gives you a view of that from the water, while a drive shows the same herds from the bank.

Rules that affect photographers

What you may and may not do.

Boats do not land near animals, and park rules forbid harassing them. You may leave a vehicle only at designated facilities or under a permit, so a shot on foot is not an option. Swimming in park waters is not allowed.

Do not assume a drone is allowed. Some camps ban drones, so ask your operator before you pack one. Speed limits are 40 km/h in the park, which also helps a steady camera. For an overview of drives and hours, see the safari page.

Where Chobe photography goes next.

Savute is the inland area with a different mood: a marsh, a channel and open ground. The road there is long and sandy, so allow time. The Okavango Delta offers water from a different angle, with mokoro canoes. See the Savute page and the Okavango page. For a tour that combines several days, the Botswana safari tours page compares trips from Kasane and Livingstone.
